Love the show, watched all the episodes, am long time fan of Richard Russo and Bob Odenkirk. If you haven't watched Nobody's Fool, do! Well-done, Josh.

Don’t have AMC, but have seen Wonder Boys, which also takes place in Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh in winter). Sounds like this series might be working some of the same ground. From Roger Ebert’s review of the film:

“My father was an electrician at the University of Illinois. He never taught me a thing about electricity. “Every time I walk through the English building,” he said, “I see the professors in their offices with their feet up on the desk, reading books and smoking their pipes. Now that’s the life for you.” ”

Not much in common with Wonder Boys, except for the fact that Hank Devereaux, Jr., is a stalled writer, much like Michael Douglas' character in that film. And the student prodigy is a real talent in Wonder Boys. The students in Lucky Hank have overinflated opinions of their talents.

Hank's father abandoned him for a faculty job at Columbia when Hank was quite young, and that painful history is really well told throughout the film. Hank Sr. is a cautionary example for what Gracie DuBois might become with her publication obsession. Not enough space in today's column to fit all this in, but I think you'd find it much more nuanced than Wonder Boys.
